Abkhazia occupies the sixth place in the world for the cultivation of hazelnut.
In the first place in the cultivation of the walnut is Turkey, followed by Italy, America, Azerbaijan and Georgia, then Abkhazia.
The head of the non-profit partnership, Abesalom Kvarchia spoke about the prospects for the development of nut production in the republic. "Now there are new production technologies, if we get 600 tons of walnut from 300 hectares of plantation, then we consider it a success." In Croatia, for example, new technologies are used, from 40 hectares they get a nut yield of 600 tons, this method is called a spindle method.
According to Abessalom Kvarchia, the technologies for planting a walnut in Abkhazia do not meet the standards more than nine thousand families are engaged in the cultivation of the walnut in Abkhazia.
"With the right planting in places where today we get five to six kilograms of a nut from a plant, we can bring up to 15-20 kilograms." We used to plant a nut a short distance, but through the world, we plant a nut five or six meters apart, and one seedling, not a few, as we do, and this increases productivity," he says.
"There are families that have 20 tons, 3 tons or 500 kilograms, but all manufacturers are more than nine thousand," he added.
The total area on which the walnut is planted is more than eight thousand hectares and about five million walnut roots.
In the world, walnut cultivation has become popular, even in countries where the nut did not grow, for example, in Europe or the Crimea
There are 15 species of walnut in the world. The most common and popular were almonds, hazelnuts, cashews and pistachios. They are used in industrial production. The leader of hazelnut export among the continents is Asia - 80%. In second place Europe with 16%, the share of America - 4%, Africa has less than 1%. Among the countries the leader of the production of hazelnut is Turkey. Annually, it exports up to 900 thousand tons. It is followed by Italy, Azerbaijan and Georgia. There are no statistics in Abkhazia, but Abessalom Kvarchia is sure that Abkhazia occupies the sixth line in this list.
