Agro-industrial sector of Abkhazia

Agriculture is a traditional sector of our economy. Abkhazia is a manufacturer of high-quality, ecologically clean agricultural products. The number of peasant farms is growing. Agricultural land makes 201 thousand ga. Nearly half of the population lives in rural areas and 90% of agricultural products are produced in private farms.
Citrus fruits successfully grow on the territory of the republic, the most widely used are: oranges, tangerines and lemons. On average, the harvest is 40-50 thousand tons per year.
Gross harvest of persimmon is an average of 15 thousand tons. Abkhaz hazelnuts are very popular. It has excellent quality and is rich in fat and protein. Gross harvest per year is 5 - 6 thousand tons.
Another crop which was successfully introduced in Abkhazia is tea production. According to indicators of quality, Abkhaz tea complies with international standards, as the mild subtropical climate and a clean environment have created the ideal conditions for its growth. In the Soviet period Abkhazia plantations accounted for 14 thousand hectare. Tea was one of the budget-making sectors of the economy and was actively exported. After the collapse of the USSR the industry went into decline. The area of saved plantations is about 350 hectares. Today, at the initiative of the country's leadership, the Abkhazian tea production begins to recover.
Food and processing industry of the Republic, despite the wide range of agricultural products, are poorly developed and are mainly represented by the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (wine, liquors, sweet, carbonated and non-carbonated drinks, mineral water, beer).
On the territory of the Republic there are several modern wine-vodka factory. Raw materials for the production are exclusively local. Culture of grapes in Abkhazia has a long tradition and was widespread in mid-19th century. The annual gross volume of grapes is on average 6-7 thousand tons. The area occupied by vineyards, is 2.5 thousand ha.
