Citrus in Abkhazia

Сitrus is one of the priority agricultural sectors of the Republic of Abkhazia. Mandarins (including tangerines and satsumas), oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and citrus hybrids, such as clementines, wilkings are grown here. 
The history of citrus in Abkhazia starts from XVIII century, by the time when the first planting of lemon had appeared. The oranges are grown in Abkhazia from the 40s of the XIX century and the tangerines were imported from Turkey from about a hundred years ago.
Citrus fruits which are grown in Abkhazia have high adaptability to various aboriginal soils and hardiness to cold. It is well known that citrus fruits have a wide range of health-giving properties and a large supply of vitamins. By its useful and health-giving properties the tangerines from Abkhazia are not inferior to citrus from other countries. They are pollution-free and ripen much earlier. 
In the General structure of exports, citrus occupies the leading place (80% of harvest goes for export). The main exportable sort is – Mandarin, which is very popular, especially for the New Year holidays. The total yield of citrus per year is from 30 to 50 thousand tones.
