The New Athos Cave

16.12.2015

The New Athos Cave in the Abkhazian town New Athos may be considered one of the most interesting sights of Abhazia, along with the Lake Ritsa and the New Athos Monastery of Simon the Cananaean.

It was opened in 1975, has a length of 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) and counts 3 stations. There are three trains currently used by the railway: two of them are Soviet built "Tourist" trains and the third is newly built Latvian Ep 563. Since 2014 this is the only train in use. One of the "Tourist" trains was modernized in 2005 in Moscow and based at Zal Apsny station for doubling the Ep 563 train in case of malfunction. Another "Tourist" train is based in the depot.

The line is a single track and electrified narrow gauge railway. It starts at the entrance of the caves, nearby Psyrtscha station of the Abkhazian railway. From the "Entrance Gate" station, it reaches two cave halls: "Apsny Hall" (or Abkhazia) and "Anakopea Hall". Apsny station serves to lead the tourists at the beginnings of the show cave, and Anakopea to bring them back to the entrance gate, at the end of the tour. The line counts a depot just before Entrance station, and a service tunnel between it and Apsny.

The line of length 1291 m includes 3 passenger stations. Outrun intervals are 816 and 475 m. The train passes them for 3 and 2 min with speed up to 30 km per h. The starting station "Entrance gate" is maintained as entraining-disembarking one, the middle station "hall Abkhazia" - as disembarking one, and the final station "hall Anakopea" - as entraining one. The line is one-tracked, narrow-gauged. Width of a gauge is 914 mm. The depot is situated just before the starting station at side, opposite to the tunnel to the cave. The double-tracked branchs are available in tunnel after starting station and in a hall of final station. Also between starting and middle stations there are 2 asides towards to service tunnel and station. A small part of rail track before the depot comes out under coat. Full length of all tunnels is about 2 km.

The power supplies of the rolling-stock are obtained from the contact rail, located between running rails and shielded by a cover.
